Orders of Light

Transmission holograms on Glass. 3x15” - 12x16”

2018-Present

This work explores purely optical qualities of holography. The kinetic and spatial imagery is generated by a simple light bulb pointed at the hologram. No “image” or object exists…, just altered properties of light.

At its most basic core, holography demonstrates interference properties of light. Light behaves like water and sound waves. When two waves collide they “interfere” with each other, causing an altered wave.

The title of the series, Orders of Light, describes a phenomena of light. For example, when looking at a very clear rainbow after a storm with dark clouds, sometimes a second rainbow is visible. This “second order” rainbow is an example of “orders” in light that continue to repeat infinitely.
